Around & About: Borman finishes fourth at NACA meet
A long, but memorable track season finally came to an end for Brittany Borman. The former Festus High standout finished fourth in the javelin for Team USA at the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association championships July 9-12 at Miramar, Fla. Borman, competing on a national team for the first time, won a spot on the USA U-23 national team with a strong effort that was capped by a nice effort at the recent USA Track & Field Championships at Des Moines. Borman threw the javelin 164 feet, 1 inch at the NACAC meet, two inches shy of teammate Marissa Tschida, who won the bronze medal.
Borman's sophomore season at Oklahoma probably was the best spring collegiate track season ever by a Jefferson County athlete. The Big 12 discus champ and Oklahoma discus record holder, she won all-America honors with second-place finished in the discus and javelin at the NCAA Championships.
MORE POWER: Former Northwest High star Angela Krausz earned NAIA all-America honors in the hammer throw for Lindenwood University. A senior, she finished second in the NAIA championships last month. Krausz had a terrific career at Lindenwood, setting Lindenwood records in the hammer throw and the indoor-season weight throw and finishing in the top five in the outdoor discus and shot put and the indoor shot put. ?Â-
A scan of Lindenwood's list of top 10 performers in women's track is a reminder of how talented and tough a couple county performers were in their prime. Tops on the list is Lindenwood Hall of Famer Amy Knobloch, a former Crystal City ace who is at or near the top in seven outdoor events, ranging from the 800 to the marathon, and four indoor races. ?Â- Kristy Sullivan from Fox is on the top 10 list in four outdoor and three indoor events and Christine Bender from Windsor is on the top-10 list of three outdoor and one indoor runs.
CLEAN SWEEP: Regardless of the season, Brendon Neel of Festus delivered a whip-smart effort for the Tigers. The May graduate was a solid three-sport performer on the field - and field - and a standout student. Recently, he completed the student-athlete trifecta, winning academic all-state honors in a third sport. A member of the academic all-state teams in football and basketball, last week he was on the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association's academic all-state team. Neel, an outfielder, batted .397, slugged .825 and had 14 extra-base hits for the 18-9 Jefferson County Conference co-champs. He would have been a strong conference MVP candidate if teammate Ryan Yuengel hadn't turned in such a spectacular combination of pitching and hitting this spring. ?Â-

Coach Jeff Young's Windsor squad earned one of the few academic all-state team honors handed out by the baseball coaches association. The Owls checked in with a jaw-dropping team GPA of 3.51. Only six other Class 4 teams earned all-academic notice.
SUMMER STANDOUTS: If you are trying to map out what might be coming this fall when volleyballs zoom across nets around the county for real, scratch these names on your players-to-watch list: Kayla Fortner of Northwest, Molly DeClue of De Soto, Danielle Guseman of Windsor, Audrey Cooper of Crystal City and Marisa Alford of Jefferson. Those five earned notice on the all-camp teams selected at a couple of the Licking Summer Camps. Fortner and Cooper played in the camp earlier in July at Farmington, while DeClue, Guseman and Alford moved in and out of the spotlight at the St. Louis camp in June.
DECIDING ON LINDENWOOD: Seckman all-time hoops scoring leader Marissa Lehnig recently made her college choice. The two-time Suburban South Player of the Year has committed to Lindenwood. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged 19.6 points last winter and was the Suburban South leader in scoring, steals and free throws. ?Â- An interesting challenge awaits Lehnig and the Lindenwood teams: While there's a two-year waiting period ahead, the Lions teams will make the move from NAIA to NCAA Division II by the time Lehnig is a junior.
