A St. Peters restaurant closed this morning after a small fire started in the building’s attic, according to Central County Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Steve Brown.

Shortly before 11 a.m., employees of El Tio Pepe Mexican Restaurant, 4245 Veterans Memorial Parkway, were preparing to open the restaurant when smoke poured into the kitchen through the vent pipes, Brown said.

Firefighters from Central County and the St. Charles Fire Department responded at 10:49 a.m. and saw smoke coming out of the building’s attic, he said.

The fire probably was caused by the heating equipment in the attic, Brown said, adding no foul play was suspected.

No one was injured.

He said the restaurant employees expected the business to remain closed for the rest of the day and reopen Friday.

Firefighters had the fire under control in 20 minutes, Brown said. Damage was limited to two holes firefighters cut into the roof to access the fire.
