CREVE COEUR

delmar GARDENS PLAN WITHDRAWN

Delmar Gardens Enterprises Inc. is withdrawing its request to rezone 5.9 acres at 12152 Olive Boulevard and 850 Country Manor Lane. The city was notified by John King, an attorney representing the company. The company planned to demolish an existing nursing home and construct two office buildings and a parking garage. King said the company would not file another zoning request on the site for at least a year. He asked the city not to try to rezone the land back to residential for at least a year without giving the company at least two weeks' notice. Some residents living nearby were opposed to the planned rezoning for the three- and five-story buildings, saying they feared an increase in traffic on Olive and traffic cutting through subdivisions. City Administrator Mark Perkins said the city council Nov. 9 pulled public hearing and resolution items on the rezoning from the agenda.

Fifty-two persons dropped off 681 prescription medications on Nov. 7 during the Eureka Police Department's second prescription drug take back program. The police department conducted an earlier take back program Sept. 19 that resulted in 441 medications being turned in, Chief Michael Wiegand said.

The program was conducted in partnership with the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (NCADA) and the Rockwood Drug Free Coalition. Wiegand said prescriptions received included Hydrocodone, Oxycodone and Methadone pills, some of the most abused prescription drugs. Wiegand said Eureka wants to assist other communities to conduct take back programs and to educate residents about why drug take back programs are needed.
