Fire forces families from St. Charles apartments

Tuesday, November 3, 2009 3:13 AM CST

Firefighters on Monday were still trying to determine the cause of a two-alarm fire that displaced two St. Charles families and killed a dog over the weekend.

Firefighters responded at 6:47 p.m. Sunday to 2744 Steamboat Lane in the Marina Apartments, said Steve Brown, assistant fire chief with Central County Fire and Rescue Protection District.

The unit was a two-story apartment building with a garage in the basement, Brown said. Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting out of the garage, Brown said.

No one in the family was hurt, but firefighters were unable to rescue the family's pet dog, Brown said.

Brown estimated the fire caused $150,000 in damage, including the apartment's destroyed contents.

A second unit also sustained smoke damage, he said.

Katie Nagus, a spokeswoman for the St. Louis-area chapter of the American Red Cross, said a relief team was dispatched to the apartment at 7 p.m. and provided the families with blankets.

The Red Cross also provided a hotel room and money for food for one of the families, she said. The other had shelter and assistance from others.

The families were able "to get clothes and stuff out of the apartments," she said.

The relief team was made up of local volunteers who are on-call about one week a month to respond to emergencies like fires, Nagus said.
