Herky High hires new principal
Runzis headed to Jefferson City

Herculaneum High School has its man.

Superintendent Stan Stratton announced on Monday the hiring of new principal John Hixson.

Hixson comes to the district from Frankfort High School in West Frankfort, Ill.

"He has 11 years of experience as a high school principal," Stratton said. "He also has a proven record raising ACT scores and that's something we're trying to do."

Hixson also served as principal for Marble Hill High School in Marble Hill, Mo. and as a teacher at Clarkton High School in Clarkton, Mo.

Hixson replaces outgoing principal Andy Runzi.

Runzi, who has worked in the district for 14 years, is headed for Jefferson City High School where he will serve as assistant principal.

His wife, Debbie Runzi, herself a longtime educator in the district, has also accepted a position with Jefferson City as chairwoman of the counseling department.

Along with administrative duties Runzi coached baseball, basketball and football, with the baseball field being named in his honor.

Runzi said the decision to leave was difficult.

"It certainly isn't a situation where we are leaving the district in a negative light," he said. "I grew up and went to school here and I'm leaving with a great deal of pride."

Stratton said the Runzis would be missed.

"We're sad to see them go but it's a good move for them," he said.

Hixson, who will earn $92,500 annually, begins work July 1.
