CRYSTAL CITY: Smelter hearing set for Monday

Saturday, February 28, 2009 3:13 AM CST

Residents for or against the proposed construction of a $1 billion iron smelter in Crystal City will be afforded one last chance to make their voices heard.

A public hearing is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Crystal City Elementary School gymnasium.

A vote by the full City Council will come at a subsequent meeting.

Two weeks ago the city's planning and zoning committee voted unanimously to approve the project, which has been controversial from the outset.

Backers of the plan claim the smelter will create much-needed jobs and revenue.

Opponents have cited concerns about pollution, noise and declining property values.

The smelter would be located on the former grounds of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass site, which has sat vacant for years.

The city purchased the property last year for $2.2 million then leased it to smelter developer Wings Enterprises Inc. for the sale price.

Wings plans to ship iron ore mined in Sullivan via rail for smelting in Crystal City, after which the product would be shipped out by barge.

Wings owner Jim Kennedy said the combined operations would provide 1,000 full-time, full-benefit jobs, but opponents of the project, some of whom have formed organized opposition and are challenging the smelter deal in court, remain skeptical.
